Abstract
The intrauterine device has gained’ world wide acceptance and popularity in a very short period of time. While a theoretically ” ideal contraceptive is yet to be developed ” the IUD does offer several of ^he prerequisites for such, a method. These include the disassociation of the method from coitus, subjective unawareness of the presence of the device, release from the necessity of constantly replenishing contraceptive supplies, and freedom from patient responsibil-ity for the device after insertion.
In the process of choosing a mean of contraception for the individual patient, primary consideration is given to the effectiveness of the methods available in relation to the anticipated side effects. A method which demonstrates a low rate of accidental pregnancy with a high incidence of side effects is just as an unacceptable as a method with a high pregnancy rate and a low incidence of side effects. The quest for an intrauterine device which a low pregnancy rate with a low incidence of side effects has produced a
multiplicity of devices of varying sizes & shapes .
