Abstract The thesis studied the influence of constructing a high rise building (H.R.B.) on a near-by small building (S.B.) . The analysis was done using two methods ”Ohd e method” and ,.Finite E lemen t method” . Analysis of rectangular rafts was done using where the foundation soil was considered elastic • homogeneous and finite or infinite mass . A computer prepared for that purpose . Analysis of circular rafts using the finite element method considers the H.R.B. foundation as a circular raft inside a hollow circular strip foundation of the S.B. ”an axisymmetric problem” The foundation soil was considered elastic or elasto-plastic according to Mohr Coulomb theory . An interface element of certain normal and tangential stiffness between the foundation and soil was chosen to account for the error resulting from the assumption of complete adhesion A computer program was used for that purpose· .The elasto-plastic contour pattern resulted in the soil mass at different load increments was defined for different soil types and conditions . . The contact pressure under the foundation I soil settlement and the bending moment created at the S.B. foundation before and after construction of H.R.B. were predicted through a study of the main factors affecting the S.B. such as foundation rigidity . foundation dimensions I foundation depth : intermediate distance between H.R.B. and S.B. and also the soil type. The idea of the· presence of an artificial rigid sheet pile wall (S.P.W.) between the H.R.B. and the S.B. foundations to reduce resulted new settlement under the S.B. was also studied. Ohde method isotropic program was |
