Abstract alpha -1- antitrypsin is an important antiprotease that exerts a protective antiproteolytic action in different tissues. Its deficiency is associated with early onset of pulmonary emphysema. Th i s enzyme is genet i ca fIy determf ned by two codomi nant alleles that code for its serum level and activity. About 75 alteles of alpha -1- antitrypsin were discovered till now. All generaf population studies have reported a PiM a! fete frequency ranging between 87 - 99. The corrmonest allele associated with severe deficiency is the PiZ- patients with PiZ or PiZ null genotype are exposed to increased risk for development of severe early onset of puImonary emphysema. In this study 50 chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients and 25 reference Individual were studied. |
