Abstract

This work was conducted to study the role of saline infusion sonohysterography (SIS) in the diagnosis and assessment of abnomial uterine bleeding with comparison of hysteroscopy. The study included thirty patients raiged in age from 34 — 65 years, with mean age of 47A3 (SD ± 7.74 years). Sixteen of patients were pen- menopausal, eleven patients were in postinenopausal age and three in the childbearing period.
Transvaginal sonography (TVS) had been emphasized by authors as an excellent initial screening examination for patients with abnormal uterine bleeding because it allowed direct measurement of the endometrial echo thickness.
The best tool for evaluation of the patients with abnormal uterine bleeding should be accurate, cost-effective, safe, easy to perform, and tolerated by patients in an office setting. SIS is accurate, is easy to perform, is relatively painless, and did not lead to post procedure complications. Most patients can be evaluated with this technique, and results can be obtained immediately. Unlike hysteroscopy, SIS can be performed in the presence of bleeding and offers additional information about myometriurn and adnexa. Disadvantages compared with hysteroscopy are that multiple myomas may obscure the view and patients with severe Ashennans syndrome cannot be assessed. The use of a cervical catheter with a balloon to occlude the cervixmay help in some of these cases.
