Abstract pediatric asthma is considered the most common chronic pediatric iliness nowadays , and il is rapidly increasing in prevalence .This evident rise of pediatric asthma prevalence necessitates continuous evaluation of the medical services . Aim of the work: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of bronchial asthma among primary schoolchildren in El-Menoufiya govemorate , various contributing factors, and the different patterns of clinical presentation . Subjects : Children attending eight (8) primary school (6044 children) were surveyed constituting the target population . They were 3035 males and 3009 females , their ages ranged from 6 up to 12 years. All asthmatics detected from the survey (181 asthmatics) were subjected for clinical history , physical examination , basic laboratory data ,chest-x-ray, resting and post bronchodilator pulmonary function tests . The results: of the present study showed: - The overall prevalence rate of childhood bronchial asthma in primary schools was 6.5 %. - The prevalence rate is higher in urban schools than rural schools as it is 7.1% and 6.0% respectively. - In our study there is no sex predominance as male to female ratio 1/1.03 respectively. - The most common complaint of pediatric asthmatic patients was cough |
