Abstract Anemia of chronic disorders is one of the comi-nonest types of anemia, particularly in hospital patients and is due to chronic infections as T.B., malignant diseases as carcinoma and lymphoma, chronic inflammatory diseases as connective tissue diseases and rheumatoid arthritis or renal failure. Relative EPO deficiency in hemodialysis. patients is one of the most important cause of anemia in these patients. Also, inhibition of erythropoiesis, shortening of red cell survival and’ bleeding are considered possible mechanisms o’f renal an’emla. In this study, serum EPO in anemic hemodialysis patients is. slightly elevated than normal due to associated iron deficiency anemia as shown by marked low serum iron. and high total iron binding capacity. Also, chronic liver disease patients show m;irked increase in serum EPO level for control and hemodialysis patient which is due to the complicating iron deficiency anemia and the state of hypoxia in those patients.” ’ I A’ Accordingly, we recommend r-huEPO as a therapy foranemia of hemodialysis and chronic liver disease patient after correction of iron deficiency. Following EPO therapy, mild and snort-lived side effects have been reported such as bone pains, low grade fever and allergic episodes. On the other Inn-id, complications sucl-r.is seizures and hypertensive encephalopathy, hyperlension aiKl thrombosis have been recorded. |
