Abstract

Women’s knowledge and traditional practices during pregnancy and puerperium are the most important factors affecting their health as well as their pregnancy outcome. Women have great responsibilities to pass these periods safely. The good quality of the women’s knowledge and self­ care practices at these periods are essential to ensure their present as well as future health. It is particular in public health and preventive medicine that cultural differences between science and traditions become apparant because public health workers are dealing with groups. So they must understand the culture, customs and life style of their clients. The aim of this study is to identify the knowledge, beliefs and practices of Alexandria pregnant multiparous women towards their self care during pregnancy and puerperium. The study was carried out in six MCH centres in Alexandria Governorates. bne MCH center was selected from each district (six dis~ricts) by using the blind paper method. The chosen centers were: i. El-Mandara from El-Montaza district. ii. Baquose from the East district. iii. El-Hadara from the Middle district. iv. El-Gomrok from El-Gomrok district. v. Mena-El basal from the West district. vi. El-Dekhila from El-Amria district. The target population was multiparous pregnant women during their pre-natal visits. The total sample was 300 (50 from each center). An interview questionnaire was designed to collect the needed information. * Analysis of the collected data revealed the following results:­ --Characteristics of the sample: About half of the sample (47.67) were in the age group 20-30. About 60 were illiterate and 30.33 could read and write, while only 7.34were of middle educated group.
