Abstract This thesis is an investigation of the static response of three dimensional cable structures. The thesis introduce an extensive survey of published work on general concepts, historical and structural types of three dimensional cable roof structures. A numerical procedure for the static analysis of highly nonlinear skeletal structures based on minimization of the total potential work has been extended to account for the structural components of cable roof structures. The material and geometric nonlinearities effects are accounted for in the method through an iterative procedure. Different clad roofs have been investigated representing the clad roof element as a plate element. This investigation shows the high performance and accuracy of the algorithm. A simplified approach is proposed for representing the clad plate element as two cross diagonal links. The static behaviour of clad cable roof structures are investigated as it is important to establish patterns in the structural behaviour of cable roofs considering clad effect. An extensive study on the static response of three different shapes of cable roofs, i.e. flat, hyper, saddle shapes have been performed. The effect of different parameters are investigated by using the proposed methods. These parameters are shape, increasing load, cable net to clad relative stiffness ratio. The results of this study are discussed and summarized. |
