Abstract

The use of thin-walled sections has widely increased during the last
several decades around the world. In this study a nonlinear finite
element model is presented to study the behavior of thin-walled 1section
beam-columns. A verification of the presented finite element
model bas been done by comparing the finite element results with the
results of some experimental studies. A parametric study is performed
using the finite element model taking into consideration both the
geometric and material nonlinearities. Interaction curves for the studied
I-section beam-columns have been presented. The influences of the web
width-to-thickness .ratio, flange outstanding-to-thickness ratio and
moment to normal force ratio on the ultimate strength of the beamcolumns
have been presented diagrammatically. The effect of the
different studied parameters on the behavior of beam-columns has been
discussed. Different interaction equations used by the AISI- 1”996 and
ECP-200J have been presented. A comparison between the interaction
diagrams plotted using the finite element results, AISI-1996 and ECP-
2001 has been carried out. A proposed design method for thin-walled T-
section beam-columns, based on this finite element results, has been
introduced.
