Abstract
The aim of this work was to study the incidence of complications following fractures of the distal end of the femur and their relation to the line of treatment adopted.
This study included 52 cases of fractures of the distal end of the femur in patients treated during the last 4 years from 1980 through 1983 and during the first half of 1984. All patients were subjected to thorough clinical and radiological examination.
There were 36 males and 16 females with the ratio of 9 t 4 . The age of the patients ranged from 20 to 85 years with an average of 41.5 years. The right side was affected in 25 cases and the left side in 27 cases. 12 ware house wives,20 mechanics and heavy manual workers, 14 with light jobs, 5 students and one was on pension.
The trauma in 42 patients was a road traffic accident and in 10 the fractures were caused by falls.
Seven had type 1 fractures, 20 type 2A, 16 type 2B, two type 3A, one type 3B, four typa 30, one type 4A and one type 4C.
41 fractures were closed and 11 fractures were open.
