Abstract

For solving certain coastal engineering problems, breakwaters of various types
are used to give sufficient protection against wave action, which some times,
should have a certain degree of permeability to minimize currents and
sedimentation problems. The suspended paneled breakwater, the topic of this
research, is a suggested permeable breakwater that was developed in order to
improve the efficiency of wave damping. It consists of a single row of
rectangular panels supported by small diameter piles and extended to a certain
draft below water surface.
In order to verify the hydrodynamic efficiency of the suggested system; in
terms of wave damping and reflection, an experimental study was carried out.
Through which, different breakwater configurations and variable wave climates
were investigated to determine the best structural features to obtain maximum
wave damping efficiency and the most suitable surrounding wave conditions.
from the analysis of the obtained experimental results, it was proved that the
suggested paneled breakwater succeeded in lowering wave transmission
through it to only 38% of the incident waves, which is corresponding to 85%
dissipation of wave energy. This indicates a high efficiency compared to other
types of permeable breakwaters.
Also it was found that the most dominant structural parameter that affects both
wave transmission and reflection is the spacing between panels, while the
length of panels has the second significant effect. The draft of panels seemed to
have the least effect, which explains the recommendation of using
submergence ratios less than 0.75 for economical considerations. Concerning
the surrounding wave conditions, it was found that the highest breakwater
efficiency was obtained when it is attacked by short steep waves, also it
performs better in deep water
