Abstract Polling systems were first introduced in the early 1970’s. Polling system provides performance evaluation criteria for a variety of demand based, multiple access scheme in computer and communication systems. Polling systems may be classified into several classes according to buffer capacity, service discipline, and polling strategy. This thesis presents an overview for all polling models, putting the emphasis on applications. Also overview was made on all classifications of polling systems. We present a complete study on single buffer systems as a continuous time polling model. This study provides an analysis for a one message buffer polling system consisting of statistically identical queues where the reply intervals and the message service times are generally distributed. Finally we present some numerical results and the corresponding graphs, on the performance measures for one message buffer system, and how they are affected by changing different parameters of the system conditions. The thesis consists of three chapters: Chapter 1 ”Performance Analysis”, Chapter 2 ”Polling Systems”, and Chapter 3 ”One Message Buffer Systems”. The thesis contains an Appendix on the MIG I 1 FCFS queuing system and a bibliography including 63 references. We conclude this thesis by giving a recommendation for future work. |
