Abstract Intrauterine growth restriction is not uncommon diagnosis in obstetrics and carries an increase risk of perinatal mortality and morbidity. Identification of IUGR is crucial because proper evaluation and management can result in a favorable outcome. This study was done concerning pregnant ladies who attended maternity hospital of Ain Shams university aiming for evaluation of 3rd trimester MSAFP level in women with IUGR and detecting whether third trimester MSAFP measuring may increase the positive prediction of IUGR. This case control study was started from the first of November 2007 until the 1st of April 2008 and include 60 pregnant women in 3rd trimester who fulfill the criteria planned for the study, their age was between 20-35 years, non smokers, 30 pregnant women with single healthy fetus AGA, and 30 women with single fetus diagnosed with IUGR. Intrauterine growth retarded fetuses in this study was defined as fetuses whose weight is below the 10th percentile for their gestational ages and whose causes of being IUGR fetuses are not due to constitutional causes i.e. small size parents. |
