Abstract The construction industry in Egypt has a reputation for failing to meet budget and delivery schedules. The glib explanation for this is that the industry has serious ”productivity problems”. Productivity planning and improvement must be preceded by productivity measurements and evaluation. An understanding and quantification of the factors affecting labor productivity would enable contractors to better estimate, plan, schedule and manage construction projects. Since almost all the data used in estimating and controlling construction projects are empirical, the use of estimating means and database can contribute a great deal of consistency, accuracy and credibility. Most construction projects (especially residential building construction) occur in significant numbers. The main objectives of this study were three-folded. The first was to study and record labor productivity work in Egypt. This is done on certain type of labors such as concrete pouring labors. The important factors affecting the process were taken into consideration. Successive measurements, analysis and evaluation of mean values of the productivity were performed. Analyses of lost time for concrete pouring were carried out. The sources of lost time in construction sites which cause low productivity, delay of schedule and plan modifications were also pointed out. The second objective of this study was to develop a computer model that can simulate concrete pouring operations under different conditions. The model can be used as a template and modified according to the particular environment at site to improve work productivity. The third objective was to develop a relational database system for both cost control and labor productivity control. The conceptual design phase is done, and the relational database application was developed using a powerful, Relational Database Management System. The developed program is easy to use and can be used at construction sites. The database program permits the site manager to review his progress and control it.
