Abstract ue to the urgent need for neighborhoods and communities to be rethought and reconfigured in order to be sustained for the posterity, and through the common definitions of sustainable development, this research tackles the subject matter of Sustainable Urban Landscapes in neighbourhoods as an application of sustainable urban design that transforms resources into a living environment with minimum stresses on the surrounding environment and an enhancement to human life socially, economically and ecologically. Urban-Biological analogies were made earlier to manifest the similarities between the human body and the urban context. Those analogies were helpful in exporting some theories from the science of biology to the urban design and planning field. Extending the analogies made earlier by researchers between the human cell and the neighbourhood, the research seeks to examine if the health characteristics of the human cell apply to the urban neighbourhood. In other words the research seeks to examine if the sustainability of the neighbourhood depends on the degree of its self-sufficiency, self-correction, regeneration and dynamical adaptation to the environment, as it is the case in the human cell. The research discusses and evaluates the principles that turns the resources in the neighbourhood, both natural (water, air, and green-structure) and man-made (movement network and land use), into developments closer to sustainability . Each principle when applied reflects on the urban landscapes in the neighbourhood. The research discusses several sustainable urban landscapes in various neighbourhoods and evaluates them from all sustainability aspects, then analyzes the relationship between them and the healthy cell characteristics. The research helps to reach to a better understanding of the sustainability issue from the urban design point of view. The research also helps to draw a tentative image of the sustainable urban neighbourhood and provides a proposal of a new approach which might help to reach the healthy sustainable urban neighbourhood. Testing the applicability of the proposed approach was provided on some selected urban neighbourhoods in Egypt as a verification of the validity of the proposed approach. |
