Abstract

Good nutrition of i nfa nts and children is an Investment in the -future. Adequate nutrition is essential -fov normal growth and development. Nu t ri t io na 1 status is in-fluenced by large number” o-f factors. one of which is -food consumption. When a child’s intake of -food -falls below the standard allowance. growth slows and malnutritIon ensues. Ma 1 nu t r i t ion is a multidImensIonal phenomenon which is caused by both food and non-food causes. Egypt. dur- i ng the last 20 years. has been exposed to increased economic -fluctuations with continuously i ncreas i ng -food prices. This undoubt:edly has got its impact on -food avai labi1 ity and consumption pattern of preschoo 1 ers. one o-f the most vulnerable members within household. Hence it deemed desirable to assess the current diet.avy status o-f oreschool children and the factors I n-fluencl ng them In the lIght of these socioeconomIc variables. The main objective of the present study is to provIde a base 1 i ne da ta on the current: status of food and nutrient intake of preschoolers -from which -future monitoring and eva 1 ua t Ion o-f the nutritional situation ca n be ma de in nutrition intervention programmes. .” A sample of 600 preschool child was chosen randomly f rom MCH centers and Day Care centers at the -fIve medical regions- El- Montazah­ East- Middle- Gomrok- and West- of Alexandria city after excluding Amreya region . About 45.8 theil’” mothel’”s I. o~ childl’”en, the middle 31.5 and I. high educated. educated, low educated. The I’”esults indicate that 38.1 the mothel’”s al’”e not wOl’”king. About 27.5 belong to ~amilies 40.83 I. ln the middle one. o~ of the childl’”en high socioeconomic level, and 31.67 I. in the low and ver-y low level. About 72.0 the ~il’”st I. of the childr-en al’”e in second or-del’”, 23.3 I. al’”e in thir-d or- ~or-th ot’der-.
