Abstract

The swelling phenomenon of expansive soils is
considered as one of the most serious problems which face
the foundation engineers. Several techniques were used to
reduce the detrimental effects of this type of soil.
In the present work, the sand piles effect on an
isolated footing resting on expansive soil was investigated
using model tests. Two different expansive soils were used;
the first having moderate swelling properties and the second
having very high swelling potential.
Twelve tests were performed using several footing models
under an applied constant stress of 2 kg/cm. The various
factors which affect the behaviour of an expansive specimen
containing sand pi les have been investigated: sand pi les I
diameter, their number, volume of single sand pile, the
footing diameter and sand pile depth.
It was found that using sand piles is a suitable
treatment to reduce the maximum swelling in case of
expansive soi 1 with moderate swell ing properties. On the
other hand for clay with very high swelling potential this
technique may have some limitations.
The results of the thesis provide some practical
consideration regarding the implementations of sand piles as
a treatment method for swelling soils.
