Abstract

The present study was pe~formed to evaluate the physical ” characteristics of mosquito larvae breeding sites and species composition of mosquito larvae in the study areas (Abdin and Helwanl, Cairo Govcrnorate. Bioas3ay tests were performed for the determination of the susceptibility of the collected mosquito larvae from the st~dy areas against the current larvicides. In addition, evaluation of the effect of the applied larvicides on: mosquito larvae density, hatchabl lity of the collected egg rafts, and emergence of pupae and adults from the collected larvae and pu~ae was done. Monthly retesting of the previously determined LC50 of the applied larvicides was done to detect any change in the susceptibility level among the collected mosquito larvae in ~ the study areas. The obtained data can. be summarized as follows: 1- Pilot survey: A pilot. survey was carried out before starting the present study to determine the types of breeding sites for mosquito larvae, also for identification of their species which may be found in these sites. ( 1 ) Breedinq sites: In Abdin area the breeding sites for mosquito larvae were sewage and seepage water, while in Helwan area they vere cesspool, seepage water and spring well pool. (11 ) SI2,ecies composition of the collected mosquito larvae during the pilot survey Two mosquito larvae s~ecie5 were identified during the pilbt surveynamely,Culex pipiens and Culisita lonqiareolata in the two study areas. (iii) Bioassay tests to the susceptibility or the collected mosquito lar ’/ae from the stud’L areas aillnst the current larvicides. The susce~tibility against formulated ?ermethrin 25 EC. was carried out among the collected mosquito larvae from Abd i n and Helwan areas where, the calculated LC50s were ~O22 and O. 027 ~~m, res~ectively . Also, the susce~tibi:ity of a laboratory bred susce~tible strain of mosquito larvae from Research Institute of Medical Entomology,Cairo,Egy~t against the same larvicide was determined where the obtained LC50 was 0.0018 ppm. However,
