Abstract

Multichamiel erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) are analyzed based on the rate equations with an analytical approximated model. In this model forward pumping is considered, while amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) and scattering loss are neglected. The output signal power is calculated for ten multiplexed channels along the fiber. The optimum amplifier length which corresponds to the maximum output signal power for the lowest output signal channel is then studied showing how it is affected by both pump power and input signal power. The amplifier gain is then calculated at the optimum amplifier length for each channel. This procedure is calculated for Aluminum pliosphid host material to verify our model and repeat this procedure for eight different glass hosts; namely, Aiurnino-gerrnanoilicate, Bismuth. Fluoride Phosphate, lithium niobale, Oxyfluoride Silicate, Tellurium, Aluminum Oxide, and Sodium-Niobium Phosphate. Finally, the temperature effect on the performance of the gain shape for all different host materials is studied showing which host material is more sensitive to temperature variations. Recommendation of the selection or rejection of any of the tested materials is based on the performance of each host as: the gain flaitness, optimum amplifier length and the temperature effect.
