Abstract
Lake Mariut is a brackish water body that lies in the north western corner of the Nile Delta south Alexandria. Over the last few decays, the lake has suffered from severe abuse resulting In massIve fish kills. accumulation of toxicants in food chain, depletion of oxygen from the lake. release of obnoxious odour, and floatation of thick layers of scum. These pollution manifestations were gradually generated by an uncontrolled sewage and industrIal wastes disposal through several outfalls concurrent with continuous negl igence and mismanagement of the lake. The principle point sources of pollution to the main basin were identified as Kalaa drain, EI-Omoum agricultural drain and Noubaria Cana 1 . Additionally three major point source~ of pollution discharging domestic and industrial wastewater are located along the northern shore of the basin. Eventhough, the damage seems to be irreversible. chances for improving the water quality and eliminating the undesirable effects of the pollution are plausible.
