Abstract

The occurrence of malnutrition commonly attributed to protein deficiency has been long reported to be widely prevalent in large section of the world especially in many deve.loping countries and in some parts of developed ones. The prevalence of Protein Calorie Malnutrition (PCM) is more recorded in these countries where population subsists almost entirely on vegetable diet and plant proteins and there is lack in proteins of animal origin which are generally represent the more expensive food and less available to be consumed by all persons in adequate quantities. Accurate data and information for the community nutrition if available can be used to represent an important guide to monitor the dietary status of population, assess the nutritional adequacy of food supply and measure the economic as well as other variable affects food consumption. In view of the lack of adequate data on consumed amount of animal protein by Egyptian families of different socioeconomic strata the present study was initiated to develop a nutrition data base information system for animal protein food consumption in Alexandria, that is used to be a guide to study factors influencing quantities of animal protein food consumed and the relative importance of fish as rich protein food in the total received amount of animal protein. To achieves such goal a total sample of 600 mothers were selected from kindergarden language schools to represent high socioeconomic families level and from day car centers for middle and low level by using equal allocation stratified random sampling technique. The selected sample of mothers were exposed to an interview for collection of the nutritional data concerning their families consumption of animal protein and basic information about these families using G1uestionnaire as shown in Appendix (I). The collection of data started in April (1996) and lasted for four months. Form the collected data the amount of animal protein consumed daily by person form different items were estimated and converted to the actual protein of each in grams. Based on the collected data the Nutritional Database Schema was designed from four files ”three minor files and relational one”. Data obtained by construction of this database system were used to statistically treated using the two statistical techniques of Multiple Regression And Correspondence Analysis. . This Studv Revealed The Fonowine: Underline Results: About 21.2 of the surveyed families were from the west district of Alexandria, 25.3 from the middle district, while the rest 53.5 of the sampled families were from the eastern district. .
