Abstract

Amerya is one of the newest industrial complexes in Alexandria City. Amerya is located in the south-west of Alexandria governorate, and it represents about tenth of the city area. The main industrial activities in the Amerya Industrial Complex, AIC, encompass petroleum refineries, petrochemical manufacturing, textile spinning and finishing industry, pharmaceutical plants, soft drinks, and mediurn scale plants for manufacturing of carpets, ceramics, papers and detergents. There are many other small-scale industries located in the area. The iiquid wastes generated from these industries are disposed to the nearby water bodies; deteriorating the receiving drains and consequently. the natural water resources. Also, the improper handling of the air pollutants and solid wastes is sharing in the environmental deterioration in the AIC. The future development extensions of the already existing industries ,as well as the addition of new industrial activities. These expected developments will add much more loads upon the area if they will go on without the proper environmental protection techniques. One of recent techniques is the Environmental Impact assessment technique. So, this study is purposed to investigate the impacts of the existing industrial development in EI-Amerya, including data gathering, classifying and, analyzing them. Also, the study is aiming to predict the future impacts and finally make a comparison of the possible alternative~to mitigate the impacts of the industrialization. in the AIC. I I I It was found that; about 80 industry is already existed in the area in addition to the free zone area. These industries are categorized and scooped, in this study, to realize their impacts on the area. Mis~r Amerya Spinning and Weaving Company ;ASWC, Petrochemical industry, Alexandria Beverage Industry, Carbon Black Industry, and Free Zone Area are completely surveyed. The wastes of the first three mentioned industries were analyzed and found to be beyond the permissible limits of the law 48/82. It was found that: The industrial wastewater of Miser EI-Amerya Textile is characterized by: high pH(10.4), COD (807 mg/L), BaD (308 mWL), and oil and grease (12 mg/L). While Petro-chemical industry wastewater have recorded high values oh pH (9.8), COD (480 a 11 j mg/L),BOD (287 mg/ILsulfates (618 mg/L)and oil and grease (38 mg/L). The final wastewater of Alexandria Beverage Industry has a pH of (10), COD (257 mg/L), BaD (160 mg/L) and total solids (1972 mg/L). The first two wastes affects EI-Tahrir drain directly and lake Mariout indirectly, while the last affect EI-Amerya drain directly and EI-Noubaria Canal indirectly. The main problem of the Carbon Black industry was the air pollutants mainly, the total suspended particles (114 11g/m3) which is colored with the carbon black; which recorded at some troubleshooting (244 11g/m3)and also the sulfur oxides (1 1 1.6 pwm3) as air pollutants of the combustion process in this industry. The wastes of the free zone, from the field survey, are very small in the quantity and mainly disposed to the last western basin of lake Mariout. The land use, water use, socioeconomic, soils ,meteorology, air quality, ecology, and noise factors and data were collected and analyzed to realize the impacts of the industrial development in AIC. An environmental impact assessment matrix has been done for studying the final impacts of the existing situation, ALT I., and other two alternatives: the first is keeping on the existing development but under the application of the EIA, All. 11, and the second is moving out every new industry to Burg El-Arab City; with permission for the extensions of the already existing industries, Alt. Ill. These impacts were studied upon the physico-chemicaL biological and social environmental parameters. These impacts have been studied quantitatively; by giving the impacts degrees started from beneficial effects +3 to + 1 and adverse effects from-1 to -3 passing by the no environmental effects with zero value. After testing the existing situation and the other two alternatives; the study recommends the application of the AL T III for the industrial development in the AIC, which had -+ 19 value., Meanwhile, ALT I., and ALT 11. recorded -29 and -6 values respectively. Also the study recommends a comprehensive visibility studies from the investment point of view, upon the determined alternative.^leng
