Abstract The present study was carried out to investigate the adsorption of some constituents of cigarette smoke condensate on humic acids. One of them is nicotine which is hazardous for health. Mechanisms of interactions between pure nicotine and four different humic . acids were studied. Humic acids used were: synthetic from hydroquinone and three soil humic acids extracted from podzol, brown soil and alluvial deposited soil from Shobrakhit. The adsorption was carried out in water for the brown soil and Shobrakhit humic acids which were insoluble in water. Adsorption on the four humic acids could be tested in n-heptane medium, as they were insoluble in such medium. Change of medium was done to study the Lewis base-Lewis acid properties of the interaction between the Lewis base nicotine and humic acids which possess characteristics of both true and Lewis acids. It was found that all humic acids adsorb various amounts of nicotine through different mechanisms depending upon the kind of humic acid and the medium in which the adsorption took place.
