Abstract

The main objective of the present study is to investigate the effect of dike inclination with the direction of the flow, relative dike width and flow parameters on the local scour formed around dikes. The problem is studied experimentally in the hydraulics laboratory faculty of engineering Alexandria University. There main groups of experimental runs considering different dike lengths are conducted using five different angle of inclination with the direction of flow for each group of runs. The sand mixture forming the flume bed is the same for all runs and has the same geometric standard deviation and mean particle diameter. Dimensions of the scour hole around dikes are measured and values of the maximum scour depth, length of scour hole, width of scour hole and maximum mound height are determined. Experimental results are analyzed considering hydraulic and geometrical parameters. Groups of non-dimensional equations obtained which may be used to predict the main dimensions of the equilibrium scour hole.
