Abstract

The stabilization pond is aversion of the natural wastewater treatment systems , the stabilization pond utilizing the ambient air temperature and sun shine rays in producing algae biomass which introduce oxygen to waste and enhancing the removal of organics from the wastewater. The stabilization pond characterised by simplicity and low cost compared to other wastewater treatment systems if enough low cost land is available , so that ir development countries with high ambient air temperature , the stabilization pond i: more appropriate system. The stabilization ponds mainly consist of three stages ’.anaerobic , facultativ< and maturation ponds. There is a wide variation in design criteria of three stages throughout th world , because of variety of wastewater characteristics and meteorologies parameters. The high ambient air temperature in arid region of saudi arabia , the hig COD removal efficiency , the simplicity of operation , the availability of land wit low cost and low total cost make the stabilization pond an attractive treatment optio particularly in places like Saudi Arabia where land is available with low cost. The facultative pond are considered as a heart of treatment in stabilizatic pond systems.
The principal objective of this research was to develop a mathematical mod for design of facultative pond in Saudi Arabia , which can predict filtered efflue: COD under combined effect of various ambient air temperatures and differe surface loadings in terms of ( kg COD/ ha .day ). Based on the observations and results obtained from this study the followin recommendations are concluded ’. 1- The mathematical model for design of facultative stabilization ponds in arid region of Saudi Arabia had been developed to predict filtered effluent COD under combined effect of various ambient air temperatures and different surface loadings. 2- The developed model introduce that at average ambient air temperature of 36 °C,the surface loading can reach up to 835 kg COD/ha.d , but at average ambient ai temperature of 28.0°C the surface loading is limited to 230.0 kg COD/ha.d to produce the same filtered COD of 150 mg/1 at low temperature.
