Abstract

The last decade witnessed a revolution in computer communication that increased computer capabilities and reliability, while decreasing its cost. A single integrated high speed network can support a wide range of quality of service and provide performance guarantees for heterogeneous clients. Since real time applications have stringent delay requirements on every packet, pro¬viding average performance guarantees is not adequate for these services. In¬stead a worst case guarantee is needed. The simple best effort, connectionless; service, fails to satisfy new applications needs. Connection oriented, virtual circuits, provide required guarantees but at the expense of increasing complex¬ity. Connections must be established and resources reserved before starting sending data. Scheduling, together with admission control, provide the two most important components for traffic management. While admission control reserves resources during connection time, scheduling allocates such resources according to each connection reservation.
