Abstract Water pollution hazards have been increasing during the recent years due to the disposal of sEillitary and industrial wastes. So t he search for an easy, e.ccurate and time savine; methods for the detection of faecal coliforms -the most acceptable indicator organ ism- is an important factor helping the public health worker for earlier detection of .po’llution. In this study three methods were used for the detection of faecal.coliforma, these methods are the MPN which is considere d as the standard met hod, the L.E.S and the two layer MF methods. This work was carried out in order to find out which methbd is more . I efficient for the isolation and enumerat ion of faecal coliforms from fresh water samples. ~ A total of 134 water samples from Bab-Sharky water treatment plFlnt. ’Phese were subdivided into the following samples: 61 samples from raw water (21 the Mahmoudia canal, 11 the Private canal, 19 the Balance reservoir and 11 the Treatment plant); 23 samplerJ fron decanted water (12 Clarifier No. 4 and 11 Pulsator), 25 samples from filtered water (13 Filter No. 4 and 12 Aquazur filter) and 24 samples from fully treat ed ’;;C1t er (12 Resel’voir No. 2 and 12 tup \vater). The results of this ctudy reve~led the following: 1- Out of the 134 water samples examined, 24(22) samples of fully treated were found to be free of faecal aoliforrns by all t he three methods. |
