Abstract

Streptococcus agalactiae (GBS), present in the gastrointestinal tract
of healthy adults as a common normal flora. GBS is the most common
etiology of neonatal sepsis and meningitis, which occur in 0.5 to 3
newborns per 1000 live births. Moreover, group B Streptococcus also
induces maternal chorioamnionitis, preterm labor or even stillbirth.
Accurate and rapid screening of GBS in pregnant females,
especially those who have got inadequate antenatal care during pregnancy
will allow to effectively preventing GBS infections in neonates and
mothers. Molecular technique could be a rapid technique with
comparable sensitivity and specificity to traditional methods based on
culture.
This study aimed to evaluate the performance of a PCR to detect
GBS colonization of pregnant women and to detect the prevalence of
GBS.
The present study was done in Clinical Pathology and Obstetrics
and Gynecology Departments, Faculty of Medicine Menoufia university
Hospitals during the period from June 2019 to June 2021.
In this study, perianal and Vaginal swabs were collected from 250
pregnant women, between the 35th and 37th weeks of pregnancy, vaginal
&perianal swabs were 120 (27 GBS), and Vaginal were 130 (23 GBS).
The ages of patients ranged from 20 years to 40 years old.
All pregnant women included in this study were subjected to
complete medical history and clinical examination.
