Abstract Mercury is considered to be both an occupational and environmental health hazards. It is a highly effective protoplasmic poison. Even with the present recognition of its hazards, the incidence of intoxication remains significant and the need for effective therapy remains high. This study was carried out to evaluate the • problem of chronic mercury exposure as regards the clinical manifestations encountered as well as the effect of mercury and the chelating agents on the level of some trace elements in the blood. The trace elements chosen in this study were : Copper, 2inc, manganese and lithium. The study was conducted on twenty five workers in fluorescent lamps’factory, chronically exposed to mercury vapour, admitted to the occupational medicine unit in Alexandria ; Health Insurance Organisation, for treatment of chronic mercury intoxication during the period from the first of January 1985 to the end of June 1985.
